SIGIRIYA – KANDY

Climb Sigiriya Lions Rock Fortress
Sigiriya was designated as a world heritage site in 1982. Sigiriya is famous for it’s palace ruins on top of a massive 200 meter high rock surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and other structures. The rock itself is a lava plug left over from an ancient long extinct volcano.

Lion Rock is recommended to climb from 7 AM to avoid the heat and crowd. The climb to the top will take about 45 minutes. Exploring the whole area around and on top of the rock will take you about 2 – 3 hours.

Kandy Lake
also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, is a man-made lake located in the center of Kandy, Sri Lanka, The lake extends 6,544 square metres with a circumference of 3.21 km. The deepest part is 18.5 metres deep with a small island in the middle on which stand the ruins of what was supposed to be the king’s pavilion for relaxing.

Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. The relic was historically held by Sinhalese kings. The temple of the tooth is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple and the relic.
